Bio
Dr. Cynthia West is a public speaker and thought leader on technology and ethics. She leverages her experiences as a 4-time startup co-founder to drive impactful and thought-provoking keynote speeches. Dr. West’s talks span multiple areas from technology and the ethics, surveillance technologies, biometric technologies, human-machine interface technologies, and how they impact culture, society, politics and even physical bodies.
Professionally, Dr. West spent 30+ years in the technology industry as a co-founder and leader of sales and marketing teams. Her unique gift is being able to understand new, complex technologies and distill the complexity into understandable messages for laypeople. She hired, onboarded, trained, and managed the sales teams to grow the revenue from $0 to $10m.
Her startups included an online software store, TestDrive, in 1993, that was acquired by R. R. Donnelley & Sons, Audio Highway, an early audio on demand platform and MP3 player, in 1994, that went IPO with its highest valuation at $500m, Kanisa, an E&Y backed knowledge management platform, and Fresco, a smart kitchen platform, an ongoing concern.
Dr. West was the first female V.P. of Sales for the publicly held company, PROS, a pioneer in the AI revenue and pricing solutions market in 2017. She led the team that closed the company’s largest SaaS revenue deal at $3m per year.
Recently, as part of her “give-back” career, Dr. West led the Leatherby Center for Entrepreneurship and Business Ethics at Chapman University, and taught entrepreneurship and sales as a faculty member. She raised $2.5m in funding for the entrepreneurship center and built 8+ programs that were offered at no cost to the students and the wider community.
Now, Dr. West weaves her life’s work on technology and ethics from her published book Techno-Human Mesh: The Growing Power of Information Technologies, with her public speaking career. In 2000, she warned of the potential social, cultural, and political impacts of what we were building in Silicon Valley. Now as we are in the AI era, the topic of tech ethics is even more urgent.
